Drama Studio Wrap
The Drama Studio is a vibrant, fringe-theatre space upon which creative artists can congregate, to share their ideas, skills and rich interpretations of the world around them. Through a collaborative, multi-modal theatre context, The Drama Studio offers a multitude of opportunities for the students to engage with performance.
This year, Semester One was two-pronged: a roving showing in the Beanland Memorial Library chronicling the impact and efforts of famous ‘rebels’ in history; followed by the experimental visual production of an abridged version of The Riddle of Washpool Gully, complete with puppetry.
In Semester Two, The Drama Studio collectively drew from the playwrighting skills of two of our members Issy McKeown (9W) and Amelia Davis (9R), and the directing prowess of two BGGS alumnae Kyla Johnston (2022) and Camille Cahill (2022) to showcase a trio of performances for family, friends and fellow students. Offering its audience a variety of styles across two evenings, the clump of creatives performed with gusto with the audiences relishing in the entertainment. Congratulations to our student playwrights Issy and Amelia—their plays Murder at the Normanby and Satan’s Daughter served up mysterious vibes and haunting moments, some of which will reverberate with us for eons.
It has been my pleasure to facilitate The Drama Studio this year. Thank you to the many dedicated staff who have assisted in making the 2024 program possible: tutors, Nicholas Cooper, Ling-Hsueh Tang, Camille Cahill and Kyla Johnston; Guest Artist, Helen Stephens from Dead Puppet Society; and Coordinator of Co-curricular Drama, Ms Belinda Lindsay. To the wonderful student creatives—thank you for offering your enthusiasm and passion for Drama in this fun, thriving theatre space. I look forward to sharing more creative moments in, what I’m sure will be, an equally illustrious year in 2025.
