Chinese Year 8 and 9 excursion to Chung Tian Temple
Last Friday, Year 8 and 9 students studying Chinese, embarked on a memorable Chinese excursion to the Fo Guang Shan Chung Tian Temple. The day was filled with enriching experiences that not only deepened our understanding of the Chinese language and culture but also offered moments of reflection and mindfulness.
Throughout the excursion, the temple’s monks were welcoming and inspiring, guiding the group through lessons on meditation, calligraphy and mindful living. We learned the graceful art of Tai Chi, practiced mindful calligraphy, and explored meditation techniques. Students also gathered in the tea hall where we experienced the art of a traditional tea ceremony and learned about the precise techniques involved in brewing and pouring, appreciating the care and attention to detail that goes into every step. The highlight was tasting a highland mountain tea, which was both strong and refreshing. As we sipped, the tea master explained the cultural significance of tea in fostering mindfulness, patience, and social connection, making it a moment of reflection as well as enjoyment.
The day served as a reminder to take time to enjoy life’s simple pleasures. One of the highlights was ringing the temple bell to send blessings to a chosen person—a touching way to conclude the visit. We found the day both peaceful and engaging, leaving us with a deeper appreciation for Chinese traditions and the role of mindfulness in our everyday lives.
