In her final year at Girls Grammar, Fiona Qiu (2017), balanced her duties as Griffith House Captain and Student Council member with the many ensembles in the Music Department.

Fiona continued to follow her musical passion following graduation, both nationally and worldwide, and has been recognised for her talent, receiving many prestigious awards.

Only eight years on, and Fiona is a founding member of the Artamidae String Quartet, which won the 4MBS Chamber Music Prize, and an esteemed member of Australia’s classical music community – participating in chamber masterclasses with the Emmerson, Australian, Borodin, Dover, New Zealand and Goldner String Quartets. Having shared the stages with many talented artists across a variety of genres, including Michael Bublé and a host of other visiting international artists and conductors, it’s hard to believe that Fiona was once torn between the life of a musician and studying Optometry.

Since that time, her focus on music has been unwavering. While completing a Bachelor of Music at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, Fiona was appointed concertmaster of the Australian Youth Orchestra National Music Camp for the second year in a row in 2020. The significant event features more than 200 of Australia’s most talented young musicians to form two symphony orchestras and one chamber orchestra.

Up until 2024, Fiona attended the Australian National Academy of Music and since then, has been performing as a member of the Alpenrose Trio with pianist Bernice Chua and cellist Jan Lomosik. The trio was formed while they complete their Masters degree at Mozarteum University in Austria, performing in several notable concert halls across Austria including Wiener Saal, Bösendorfersaal, and Solitär Halls.

In August 2024, Fiona returned to Girls Grammar with her fellow Alpenrose Trio members to perform a concert of BartolomeyBittman, Beethoven and Brahms for the school community.

Reflecting on her time at Girls Grammar, Fiona found balancing music practice and schoolwork challenging, but also incredibly rewarding.

‘I tried my best to stick to a strict schedule, carving out specific times for both, but it wasn’t always smooth sailing. Thankfully, I had a strong support system that helped me through.

‘I’m especially grateful to my family—my mother drove me to school, violin lessons, and auditions, and I honestly couldn’t have done it without her. The whole experience taught me a lot about managing my time and staying disciplined, and those lessons have been incredibly useful in other areas of my life.’

While Fiona’s combined professional and creative musical journeys are only just beginning, her mark has already been made – forging a path of elevation, creativity and connection through the time-tested power of classical music.

Fiona is the Australian Chamber Orchestra Emerging Artist of 2025 and will be graduating with a Masters of Music from the Mozarteum University in Salzburg later this year.
