Amelia Tsikleas (2010)
Inspiring a passion for health, wellbeing and longevity
Amelia’s interest in Health and Physical Education (HPE) came from her Girls Grammar teachers. Today, she passes on the same enthusiasm to her own students.
‘Upon finishing up at BGGS in 2010, I was incredibly blessed to attend the Queensland University of Technology majoring in Secondary HPE. I have reflected deeply upon this choice because ever since day one at BGGS, walking into my Year 8 home room seeing an ex-Queensland Firebirds netballer as my home room teacher, the individuals along my journey in the HPE and sporting space made me the teacher I am today.
'I am currently in my tenth year of teaching, and I still reflect so fondly on those teachers that made such an impact on me and my development not only as a student but as a person during my time at Grammar. From Stephen Fogarty, Alice Dabelstein, Kate McCarthy and Jane Martel (1992) in HPE, to Allison Dare, Emma Lowry and many more, all of my Grammar teachers inspired me, challenged me, pushed me, and supported me in all aspects of my schooling.
‘Being on the other side of the fence now, so to speak, I think back to these times fondly as I am in the position to motivate, inspire and support the next generation on their path. There are many aspects of character, commitment and passion, alongside a deep sense of purpose that I observed in my teachers, and these memories are everlasting, and the blue blood still runs very much through my veins. I thoroughly enjoyed school with all the challenges in and outside of the classroom and I know that being a Grammar girl is, and will be always, something I hold very close to my heart.
‘Sometimes teachers aren’t sure of the impact they leave on students (I even feel this myself now) but it’s moments like this where you reflect and smile to yourself knowing just what BGGS allows young girls to do and what they can accomplish. I will always bleed blue.’
