Principal’s Welcome
Ms Jacinda Euler Welsh
Welcome to Brisbane Girls Grammar School.
In 1875, six years before women were admitted to Australian universities, Girls Grammar opened to provide girls a quality education in the Grammar tradition.
Sir Charles Lilley (1827-1897), former Premier and Chief Justice of Queensland, sought to revolutionise the state’s education system, still in its infancy and reserved for boys. His extraordinary vision and the establishment of Brisbane Girls Grammar School was so unorthodox it was labelled an ‘experiment’.
Almost 150 years later, Girls Grammar is an internationally renowned school for girls and one of Australia’s best. The School strives to enrich girls’ lives through learning, with teachers who model intellectual passion and pedagogical expertise. We maintain high expectations for our students, who are immersed in learning experiences that challenge them and nurture their individual academic, social, and emotional growth.
‘It is an extraordinary privilege to lead a school that for 150 years, has empowered girls and young women, through a broad, liberal education, to take their rightful place in the world.’
Outstanding academic results and student destinations reflect how Girls Grammar prepares girls and young women for the finest tertiary institutions in the world and greatly varied, and rewarding, future paths.
In 2026, BGGS will become Brisbane’s first secular, independent girls’ school to educate girls in Years 5 and 6. This modern iteration of the ‘experiment’ and ideals on which our School was founded represents a tangible commitment to the pursuit of gender equality, and a great optimism for our collective future.
I hope you enjoy learning more about what a Girls Grammar education could offer your daughter.
