International Skype session with American Composer

Members of the Brisbane Girls Grammar School Chamber Winds participated in a special skype session on Wednesday afternoon with America-based composer and Cairn University Professor, Dr Scott Watson.

Chamber Winds conductor, Ms Ashleigh Porter, selected his composition, Terracotta Warriors, as a piece for the group to perform at the Queensland Youth Music Awards later this year. With the power of technology, Dr Watson was able to present a virtual workshop of the piece with students at their rehearsal. Despite being 2 am in Philadelphia, Dr Watson was an energetic, engaging and enthusiastic instructor who was able to give valuable advice, insights and feedback. The second part of the session allowed students to ask Dr Watson questions about the composition of Terracotta Warriors and his life as a composer and band director.

QSO Prossima Program Auditions

In 2018, Girls Grammar launched a unique Education Partnership with Queensland Symphony Orchestra, to provide students the opportunity to be mentored by, and perform with, some of Australia’s finest musicians. The School is delighted to announce that this special partnership will continue in 2019. As part of this partnership instrumental students will again have the opportunity to audition to be part of the Prossima Program.

This year’s Prossima Program gives participants the opportunity to perform alongside some of Australia’s finest musicians in a fantastic subscription series concert, Latin America Gala under the baton of Ms Alondra de la Parra. Students are able to sign up to audition and access audition materials via Moodle.
